UUM : The K Project
This project aims to create a sustainable environment by implementing 2 sub projects - Fruit for Thought and 4Nature. These projects mainly empower local communities towards betterment by targeting the strengths and weakness of two groups - farmers and single mothers. In order to equip these group with entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, which they are lacking of, and conducted several workshops under the New Entrepreneur Development Program, N.E.D.P.R.O.
4 Nature
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are normally used by the farmers in Kedah due to the ease of purchase and subsidies provided by the government. The increase usage of these chemical based products is damaging to the earth; Enactus UUM students saw the problem and helps provide the solution. Seeing the potential for usage of bio fertilizers, the Enactus UUM students identified 7 farmers to improve the fertility of land in Kedah using organic methods. This project empowered 7 farmers to collectively cultivate 3850 kg of Indigenous Microorganism (IMO) for business and domestic use. The farmers now saved up to RM 5795 in purchase of chemical fertilizers and 2313 from chemical pesticides.
Fruit For Thought
Tonnes of decomposing fuits are thrown away everyday by fruit sellers as they are no more contain a reason for purchase by customers. The fruits would then be taken to landfills to rot by garbage trucks. The Enactus UUM students saw the potential to turn the agricultural waste into income for single mothers by producing fruit enzymes as household detergents.
The students educated the single mothers on the importance on being environmentally conscious and equipping them with knowledge and skills on enzyme production.
From this project, the single mothers were able to increase their monthly income from RM 500 to RM 620. The students also assist in the marketing of the product and linking interested parties/detergent users with the single mothers.
